Andrew Sargent, a native of California, is a graduate
of the University of California at Long Branch. Drew studied watercolor
with Muriel Doggett and Jade Fong, both prominent west coast artists.
His work typifies the best of east and west. His bold gestural strokes
full of life and character embody the Chinese painting tradition
while the soft washes and tones speak of the American landscape
tradition.
Drew's recent works exhibit a considerable range
in subject matter and stimuli. His paintings seek to excite the
viewer through metaphor rather than through photographic realism
so much the trend these days. His selective eye captures the essence
of his subjects without over definition or redundancy. The energy
in his works seem to be stored and released in the way he resolves
the conflict between the masculine and feminine qualities of what
he sees, which allows the viewer to enter his paintings rationally
and romantically. For instance, the flowers in "Duet"
sensitively captures the tension between the man and female relationship
while other paintings might reflect a graphic-manly style skyline
in soft-feminine colors. Drew's romantic eye and impressionistic
style, is rich in mood, metaphor, and color. Whatever he paints,
landscapes or flowers, all are treated equally with reverence and
appreciation.
