History & Tour Admiral Dewey's Flagship “Olympia”
Independence Seaport Museum
(Located at Penns Landing)

This state of the art, cultural learning center opened its doors in July, 1995 after more than 35 years of rich history as The Philadelphia Maritime Museum. The multi-million dollar, 100,000 sq. ft. museum features more than 20 interactive exhibits and audiovisual games throughout the galleries, Admiral Dewey's 1898 flagship at the Battle of the Manila Bay, OLYMPIA, and a WWII submarine, the BECUNA, a wooden boat shop, changing exhibition galleries and nautical gift shop. All of these are just part of the reason Independence Seaport Museum was named Philadelphia Magazine's Best New Museum for Kids in 1996

The Olympia and Becuna, familiar sights on Penn's Landing, officially became a part of Independence Seaport Museum in January, 1996. Coined the Historic Ship Zone, visitors can step into our nation's past with self-guided explorations of each vessel. The acquisition of the 1892 cruiser Olympia and World War II submarine Becuna is the first phase of a long range effort to add to the collection of historic ships. For More Info...
